Current restoration projects
On 20 June 2011, the first funding was resolved in Parliament for urgent conservation work on the Jewish cemeteries in Deutschkreutz and Stockerau. The funding approved for both cemeteries amounted to approx. 97,490 Euros.
Stockerau Jewish Cemetery
Run-down parts of the old brick wall were renewed or replaced by wire mesh fence ensuring that the cemetery is completely enclosed. The cemetery gate was renewed, overgrowth removed and the land was leveled. The existing headstones were recorded in order to prepare for their future restoration. The restoration of the Stockerau Jewish cemetery is co-financed by the Province of Lower Austria, which has provided 25 of the necessary funding.
Deutschkreutz Jewish Cemetery
The
entrance gate was restored, the wall facing was renewed on the wall of
remembrance in order to protect the gravestone fragments from adverse
weather conditions. The concrete plate on the memorial for the murdered
Jewish slave laborers of the Deutschkreutz camp was renewed. In several
areas, the earth was leveled in coordination with a rabbi and the
overgrowth on the boundary wall was removed. The existing headstones
were recorded in order to prepare for their future restoration.
