Life Stories - Autobiographical Recollections

It is very important for the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism to encourage society to come to terms with the events and consequences of the years of National Socialist rule in Austria. By recording life stories, the years 1938 to 1945 in Austria are documented from the victims' perspective.

Before a backdrop of decades of denial of Austria's shared responsibility for the consequences of the National Socialist era and the prolonged failure to grant the victims of National Socialism recognition, the process of remembering which takes place in the context of the National Fund takes on a special meaning. During the course of the application process, by recollecting the life stories orally they became refreshed in the mind. Since its establishment, many people, from Austria and abroad, have visited the National Fund personally.

Thousands of fates of people deprived of their rights, subjected to acts of discrimination and forced into exile and a new start in a different place were remembered at the National Fund. It is important to record the stories told by the victims, their personal histories and experiences during the National Socialist era. In doing so, the autobiographical memories of the survivors of the Holocaust and persecution can be preserved for posterity and contribute to raising critical consciousness among future generations. By committing the memories to paper and publishing them, the survivors are taking also an important step towards the outside world.

On the 70th anniversary of the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Reich, in March 2008 the National Fund commenced the publication of a series of autobiographical texts on its website as a special gesture of remembrance of the years of National Socialist rule from the perspective of the affected. Since then, life stories of the survivors who have declared themselves willing to have their recollections published have been appearing regularly on the National Fund's website.
